What are the most important qualities of an employee?

Words by Oliwia Mańka, ARTeria Foundation

The job market is dynamic and constantly changing. When you are looking for a job, it is important to know what skills and characteristics are in demand. In this article, I would like to explore the opinions of experts and employers on this matter.

What skills are necessary?

We have been taught that experience and hard skills are the only important things when it comes to job-seeking. Of course, they are necessary in any position, however, this issue is not so simple. It has been argued that it is easier to learn and practice hard skills, such as ICT skills, than to take care of soft skills, like cooperation. Times are changing, and people also tend to forget about developing their own personalities – and as it turns out, they are the aspects that can be decisive in the search for a job!

Some statistics

Numerous studies about the best qualities of employees have been conducted in various countries. Research carried out by the French organisation called Business at OECD (BIAC) proved that character qualities are going to be even more essential in the future. When it comes to specific characteristics, according to a study conducted by the Australian Department of State Growth Skills Tasmania, punctuality, communication, patience, and responsibility have been regarded as the most important ones. As obvious they might seem, great effort is required to be able to say you possess these qualities.

Advice for young employees

The majority of young people entering the job market do not have much previous experience. It is possible they possess some hard skills, however, they may also need further development. Work-based learning is one of the most effective ways of doing so. In this case, what do they need to have to attract their future employers? A positive approach to working! Why is it so important? People with a positive attitude are generally regarded as more approachable by others. They have more motivation to face challenges and to learn new things. You can see that it can be a crucial quality, especially for a young person!

In conclusion, we should let go of the past beliefs that experience and hard skills are the only necessary aspects while looking for a job. According to research and the current situation on the job market, more than that in required. It is time to work on your responsibility or decision-making skills!
